A Heartwarming Discovery

Toffee and her siblings were discovered near a small farm near Cullman, AL. They were all gathered up and transported to New Leash on Life rescue center in Huntsville, AL to find them all loving homes.

Her parents were both Merles, which resulted in her genetic deaf and blind issues. Toffee's sibling Vanilla, born blind, was the only other puppy afflicted by the genetic problem.  

Overcoming Challenges

After being rescued, Toffee was adopted into a home that included a big brother to help her learn to lead a normal life and understand the world around her. 

Changing Perceptions

Training a blind and deaf dog can be daunting, but with help, it can be done. "Kind Hearts Dog Training Center" in Huntsville, AL, stepped up to help, and after six months, Toffee was able to complete all the training sessions. 

Socialization

Learning to function in a quiet world, with very limited vision, requires lots of interaction with people and other dogs. This requires lots of socialization, and Toffee can often be seen in downtown Huntsville or walking the trails in her neighborhood. The picture above includes Toffee and Vanilla, the two pups affected by the double Merle gene.

Rest is Important

Sometimes it is simply time to take a break and get some rest. All dogs need a little downtime, and it is important to be sure to give them time alone to get ready for the next adventure.
